Blockbuster (entertainment)

Blockbuster, as applied to film, theatre, and sometimes also video games, denotes a very popular or successful, usually big budget production.
==Origin of the term==
(詳細はGoogle Ngram Viewer: blockbuster )〕 referring to aerial bombs capable of destroying a whole block of streets. The block of streets commonly included low income housing. 〔(Oxford: blockbuster )〕 Later the term began to be used to refer to successful theater plays, hit movies, best selling novels and computer games.
In film, a number of terms were used to describe a hit. In the 1970s these included: "spectacular" (''The Wall Street Journal''), "super-grosser" (''New York Times''), and "super-blockbuster" (''Variety''). In 1975 the usage of "blockbuster" for films coalesced around Steven Spielberg's ''Jaws'' and became perceived as something new: a cultural phenomenon, a fast-paced exciting entertainment, almost a genre. Audiences interacted with such films, talked about them afterwards, and went back to see them again just for the thrill.〔Tom Shone: ''Blockbuster'' (2004). London, Simon & Schuster UK. The second sequel to Billy Jack, The Trial of Billy Jack, released in late 1974, was a huge box office hit, while not registering as quite as big a critical success. It is notable for its casting of Native American icons such as Sacheen Littlefeather and Rolling Thunder, as well as its strong criticism of the Kent State shootings. However, Laughlin's unique promotion of the film was its real legacy. Unlike most films of the era which opened in only a few cities before gradually spreading across the country, The Trial of Billy Jack opened in cities nationwide on the same day and commercials were broadcast for it during the national news. This promotion forever changed the way films are marketed and has been called "the first blockbuster
